Forty years in the courtroom gives you plenty of stories to tell—and, hopefully, a few lessons worth sharing.
I recently had the opportunity to sit down with PodNumbra for a wide-ranging conversation about my career, the practice of law, and some of the people and experiences that have shaped me along the way.
We talked about my journey from the University of Florida to building Gunn Law Group, becoming triple board certified, and spending more than four decades representing clients during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.
But one of the things I enjoyed most about the conversation was that we went well beyond the courtroom.
We talked about family and the importance of the people who keep you grounded throughout the journey.
We talked about mentors, relationships, preparation, perseverance, reputation, giving back, and why—after all these years—it’s still great to be a Florida Gator.
We also discussed how dramatically the practice of law has changed during my career.
Technology has transformed nearly every aspect of what we do and accelerated the “pace of play.” Communication is instantaneous. Information that once took days to obtain can arrive in seconds. And with that technology has come an expectation—from clients and lawyers alike—that everything should happen faster.
The tools have changed. The fundamentals haven’t.
Preparation matters.
Persistence matters.
Relationships matter.
Reputation matters.
And no matter how long you have been doing something, there is always more to learn.
