August 23, 2001 - A Seven-Year-Old Student Was Mistakenly Given Ritalin

A second-grade student at Tyng Primary School Jyneisha Pinkney was taken to the emergency room after she took two pills meant for another student, said her mother, Araka Pinkney.

The seven-year -old girl said she was afraid that if she stopped talking she'd stop breathing. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Ritalin is a stimulant often prescribed to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). When taken by children not needing it for medical purposes, the drug can cause appetite suppression, wakefulness, increased attentiveness and euphoria.

The girl was treated and released, but doctors warned the mother to watch for an increase or decrease in the girl's breathing or heart rate during the following 24 hours.
