Settlement Reached in Montana Asbestos Case

A $43 million settlement has been reached in a lawsuit brought by 1,128 mine workers exposed to asbestos against the state of Montana over a decade ago, according to court documents.

The state will compensate the victims for asbestos-related illnesses that stemmed from their employment at the former W.R. Grace & Co. vermiculite mine in Libby.

Only $27 million of the settlement will go to the victims, after one-third is paid to the victims' lawyers and another $2 million is used to cover the costs of the investigation.

A U.S. District Court in Helena approved the settlement last week.
