Zyban is an FDA-approved smoking deterrent medicine. It was released in 1997, and since then, has been prescribed to more than five million smokers in the United States. Previously, it was available as an antidepressant under the brand name of Wellbutrin. Zyban has been linked to serious side effects, such as depression, violent mood swings, suicidal thoughts, and seizures. Family and friends who witness any of the above behaviors in people taking Zyban should advise the person to stop taking the drug and consult a physician immediately.
