Reglan, manufactured by Schwarz Pharma Inc., is administered for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders such as diabetic gastroparesis (slowed passing of food from the stomach to the intestines) and GERD (excess stomach acid backing up into the esophagus). Patients using Reglan have reported serious side effects, including tardive diskinesia, a disorder that causes random, involuntary movements in the face, tongue, eyes, and other body extremities. It is not recommended that patients take Reglan for more than three years, as side effects are more likely to occur with extended use. In February 2009, the FDA required Schwarz Pharma to include a black box warning on all packaging of Reglan.
