Meridia, manufactured by Abbott Laboratories, is prescribed to treat obesity by controlling appetite in overweight patients. The weight loss drug has been linked to several serious, sometimes fatal, side effects, including rapid heart rate, increased blood pressure, strokes, seizure, heart disease, and mental impairments.Although the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen petitioned the FDA in 2005 to recall the diet drug after almost 400 complaints of adverse side effects, Meridia is still available by prescription in the United States.
